| CANDIDATE SUPPORT: | Hints & Tips Applying for the job - First stages | Date: January 2007 | | | | | NEED TO KNOW Busy recruiters are unlikely to spend more than 30 seconds scanning a CV to decide "is this the right person for the job?" To increase your chances of selection, you should tailor your CV to emphasize your skills and knowledge to match the job specification. Some elementary truths: . the employer is the buyer. You are the salesman. Your product is you . the CV is your sales literature, the interview your sales call . people buy from people they like! Some basic principles: Understand your customer’s needs . research the company and job . why you? Be specific . Adopt a positive mental attitude - “which job shall I apply for” NOT “how am I going to find a job at my age?” . use a ‘power letter’ and customize your CV to meet the employer’s need. THE POWER LETTER Include one. The purpose is to ensure the recruiter reads your CV, so spend time on it. • Make the letter one page, factual and tailored to the job • Research the company, product and market to enhance your application - this shows interest in them and initiative by you. • Ensure the letter is clearly and logically presented and addressed correctly to the relevant person. • Avoid clichés, jokes and sounding arrogant. • State the job applied for/where advertised and include any reference numbers. • Be courteous and confident, use positive statements. For "Your requirement for a ....... is an ideal match for my x year’s commercial experience with…………… ". • If someone referred you, mention them by name in the opening paragraph. • Don't over-use the word 'I'. Explain how you will benefit the company, not how the job would benefit you • Build on your CV. If the job is in a different sector, demonstrate links between the two. Remember, this is your sales pitch. • Provide contact numbers, times/dates when you will be unavailable for calls/interview. • Check for spelling and grammar or even better, get someone else to do this - and keep a copy for your reference. • End on a positive note, and say you will follow up with a call to answer any questions they may have, so, having made the statement, carry it out!

| CANDIDATE SUPPORT: | The CV | Date: January 2007 | | | | | Layout is as important as content. It must be simply formatted, with an easy to read font, bold headings and NO LONGER than 3 pages. If it is unclear, too long, confusing - IT WILL BE BINNED! Page 1: Name and contact details, your Profile and your Achievements 12 Grenada Rd ~ Worcester ~ Worcs ~ WR3 7YH TEL: MOB: EMAIL: Profile
Up to half the page describing your main skills and attributes that relate to the position applied for
The second half of the page should list your Achievements quantifying in 'value' terms where appropriate |
IF PAGE 1 DOESN'T EXCITE, YOUR CV IS LIKELY TO BE DISCARDED Pages 2 and maybe 3: Employment in reverse date order dates and no unexplained gaps. Show company name, nature of the business, job title. focus on main responsibilities and achievements eg increased turnover by x%. use 'power' words; led, developed, created, implemented, designed. The employer needs to put a 'value' on your potential contribution. Be bold in your statements, they need to know what they are buying. detail all jobs in the previous 5 years or so. Jobs earlier than 5 years can be summarized into 2/3 lines each
Pages 3 and maybe 4: Professional and academic qualification List professional and academic qualifications and relevant competencies List training achievements and courses. You may wish to list marital status, date of birth, hobbies.
GENERAL POINTS Date of birth? Not obligatory, it will be required eventually, it doesn't take 'rocket science' to work it out. Photo? There are many inbuilt prejudices and dislikes, so don't risk rejected early on. Fancy font/graphics? Definitely NO. You are trying to project yourself as a professional. Despatch of CV? Use quality paper and envelope, and post 1st Class. Too much employment info? Use an appendix sheet and cross-reference to CV GOOD LUCK! | | | Contact: Mike Saunders | Email: mikesaunders@wrinklies.org | Phone: 0845 2601116 |
